World Sleep Day – my top 7 essential oils to help you rest naturally
Share
Sleep is one of the most important tools we have for supporting our wellbeing. Yet for many of us, switching off at the end of the day isn’t always easy. Creating a calming routine can make a big difference and essential oils are a simple, natural way to help signal mind and body that it’s time to rest.
To celebrate World Sleep Day, here are my top seven essential oils for better sleep (listed alphabetically).
1. Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) a warm wood aroma that creates a deeply grounding atmosphere. It’s often used to calm a busy mind and encourage relaxation before bedtime. Diffusing Cedarwood in the evening or adding a drop to a bedtime blend can help create a comforting and peaceful environment.
2. Chamomile (Roman) (Anthemis noblis) well known for its soothing properties. Just like chamomile tea, the essential oil is associated with relaxation and calm. It’s gentle, sweet herbal aroma makes it ideal for unwinding after a long day and preparing the body for sleep.
3. Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) is a rich resinous scent that encourages slow, deep breathing and relaxation. Many people find it helpful for quietening the mind, making it a lovely choice for meditation or calming a nighttime routine.
4. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) one of the most popular essential oils to help with sleep and for good reason. Its soft floral aroma is widely associated with relaxation and is commonly used to support a peaceful bedtime atmosphere. A few drops in a diffuser or on your pillow helps set the scene to unwind.
5. Sandalwood (Santalum album) a smooth woody fragrance that has a deeply calming effect. It’s often used to support mental stillness and emotional balance, making it a wonderful addition to evening rituals designed to slow the pace of the day.
6. Orange (Citrus sinensis) brings a gentle, uplifting citrus aroma that can help melt away the stresses of the day. While citrus oils are often energising, sweet orange, in small amounts can create a comforting and relaxing environment when blended with softer essential oils.
7. Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) is a very rich exotic floral that helps to calm the mind and promotes relaxation. In aromatherapy it’s used to support emotion balance and can be helpful when stress and over-thinking is interfering with sleep.
A simple sleep ritual
Try using two or three of the above essential oils 30 minutes before bedtime or add a drop of two to a carrier oil blend (Grapeseed, Sunflower or Sweet Almond oils) for a relaxing night-time massage. Create a consistent sleep ritual help train the body to recognise when it’s time to rest.
This World Sleep Day, take a moment to slow down, breath deeply and create a bedtime routine that supports restorative sleep.
