Share
As daylight shortens and the days get colder, our skin is first to feel those effects. With indoors warmth from central heating, log burners and hot showers bringing us comfort, they can also strip away the skin’s natural oils, leaving it feeling dry, tight or sensitive. The good news is that with a few simple adjustments, you can help your skin stay soft, balanced and beautiful this season.
Turn down the heat (a little)
Long, hot showers or baths can be tempting on chilly mornings but very hot water can disrupt your skin’s protective barrier and wash away it’s natural oils. Try using lukewarm water instead with you shower, bathe or wash your hands. Afterwards, gently pat your skin dry and apply your favourite natural body moisturiser or hand cream while the skin is slightly damp to help seal in hydration.
Hydrate the indoors
Central heating and log burners can dry the air in your home, leaving your skin feeling dehydrated. Try using a humidifier or (if safe) place a bowl of water near the heat source to restore moisture in the air. Your skin and your houseplants will thank you.
Feed your skin from within
With over 27 year’s experience as a professional clinical aromatherapist, I know healthy radiant skin starts inside. Your skin is the largest organ of the body and what we eat and drink can influences it’s behaviour. Taking a daily supplement rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs) like those found in oily fish, flaxseed or evening primrose oils can help to maintain the skin’s barrier, keeping it supple and hydrated.
These same skin-loving fatty acids are found in the natural oils and butters we use in our handcrafted skincare:-
- Sweet Almond Oil – rich in oleic acid (omega-9), it softens and smooths the skin.
- Avocado Oil – packed with omega-3, 6 and 9 fatty acids to deeply nourish dry or mature skin.
- Borage and Evening Primrose Oils – high in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, an omega-6), known for supporting the skin’s natural renewal, elasticity and helping to prevent wrinkles and premature ageing.
- Sea Buckthorn Oil – a rare source of omega-7 and omega-3, helping to calm and restore balance to stressed or weather-worn skin.
- Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter – rich in stearic and oleic acids, these butters help seal in moisture and protect against environmental stressors.
Together, these plant-based sources of essential fatty acids work in harmony with your body’s own natural processes—just as an EFA supplement supports skin health from within, our nourishing skincare feeds and replenishes it from the outside.
