Stressed with Sensitive Skin?

Stressed with Sensitive Skin?

Living with sensitive skin can be a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. Sensitive skin can suffer from redness, irritation, and itching, but there are steps you can take to help manage these symptoms and make life with sensitive skin more manageable.

First, it’s important to identify what substances may be causing your skin to react. Common irritants include harsh soaps, detergents, and fragrances, so try to find products with synthetic fragrances and dyes. I’ve seen first-hand how surfactants and foaming agents, sodium laurel and sodium laureth sulphate can cause problems. A client in one of my aromatherapy clinics used a shampoo containing ingredients which made her skin bright red and sore, and I experience reactions on the skin in my elbow creases.

Additionally, pay attention to the temperature of your shower water – hot water can strip natural oils from your skin and make it even more sensitive.

It’s also important to keep your skin hydrated. Moisturising regularly will help protect and soothe your skin. Look for products with natural skin loving ingredients, such as butters, oils and vegetable glycerin, which help moisturise your skin.

Finally, try to keep stress levels low. Stress can cause inflammation, so find ways to relax, whether it’s through yoga, meditation, listening to music, or even just getting a good night’s sleep.
